Building Trust: Enhancing Credibility and Professionalism with a Website
The Digital Edge Series | Part 2
Welcome to Part 2 of The Digital Edge Series!
A website is often the first point of contact between you and your potential customers ๐.
Because there are so many people out there looking up information online, it is extremely likely that if you do have a website, it will be the first thing a potential customer sees before they meet you or learn anything else about your business ๐.
A well-crafted website not only serves as your virtual storefront but also plays a crucial role for you in helping to establish credibility and professionalism ๐ผ.
If youโve been online recently and looked for information on a business, Iโm sure youโll understand what I mean. When you find a business online and you go to their website, thereโs a huge difference in how you perceive them based on the look of that website, and itโs the same for your customers. If a business has a clean, well-organized, aesthetically pleasing website ๐ then they will always seem more professional and trustworthy than the business who has no website at all, or who has a cluttered and garishly colored website that looks like it hasnโt been touched since the early 2000โs ๐ฐ๏ธ.
So, you tell me, if youโre trying to choose between two different businesses with a service or product you need online, which one are you most likely to go with? ๐ค
Presenting a polished and trustworthy online presence for your business can make all the difference between your next sale or the next drought ๐ง๏ธ.
Building confidence among your visitors is in part accomplished by a modern and pleasant-looking website that encourages them to engage and interact for longer periods of time. The longer they stick around, the more likely they will be to turn into loyal and long-term customers, instead of running off to your competitors ๐โโ๏ธ.
So, now the question is how do you start?
In this article, weโll go over the basics of a well-designed website and cover some helpful tips for building up trust with your visitors ๐.
Elements of a Well-Designed Website
There are three elements of a well-designed website that everyone should be aware of.
The first of the three is of course, the DESIGN ๐จ.
The visual appeal of your website is the first thing visitors will notice. A clean, modern design with a consistent color scheme, images that best represent your business, and intuitive navigation can make a lasting impression. Ensuring that your design reflects the identity and values of your business is also important when crafting a well-designed website.
The second element of a well-designed website is your CONTENT ๐.
High-quality, relevant content is key to building trust ๐ค. This includes well-written text, informative blog posts, pertinent photos, engaging videos, and clear calls to action. And of course, regularly updating your website content and posting fresh and consistent articles on your blog should also not be forgotten as this can help keep visitors informed and engaged ๐ .
USER EXPERIENCE, also called UX ๐ฅ๏ธ, is our third basic element and it is essential for retaining visitors.
Creating a seamless user experience involves fast loading times โฑ๏ธ, mobile responsiveness ๐ฑ, easy navigation, and accessible design. A positive UX ensures that visitors can find what they need on your website quickly and effortlessly.
Design: The Visual Appeal of Your Website
Now that youโve had an overview of the elements to a well-designed website, letโs go over the details of the first element, DESIGN ๐จ.
As previously mentioned, the visual appeal of your website is the first thing visitors notice, and it is what will form their first impression of you and your business. So, here are four suggestions for ensuring your design reflects you and your business in the best light possible.
The first aspect of website design is CONSISTENCY.
Consistency in design elements is key to creating a cohesive and professional look, and to maintain that consistency, there are three points you will want to consider.
The first is your color scheme, youโll want to choose a color palette that aligns with the identity of your business and use these colors consistently across all pages to create a unified look.
Next up is your typography ๐๏ธ, try to select fonts that are easy to read and reflect the personality of your business. And as tough as it can be, stick to a limited number of fonts (usually two or three).
For the third point, youโll need to put some thought into your layout, using a consistent layout structure for your pages will help visitors find information and it will create a sense of familiarity as well. Luckily, Squarespace makes this part super easy and fun with their layout sections.
The second aspect of website design revolves around your IMAGES ๐ธ.
Images are powerful tools for engaging visitors and conveying a unique message.
Letโs go over a few points for how to use them effectively.
First off, youโll want to ensure that your images are relevant to your content and enhance the message youโre trying to convey. If youโre like most people, chances are you donโt have a set of perfectly curated photos for your business, so in the beginning you may need to use a few stock photography images. While they arenโt the most individual or unique, they will do for now and you can work to replace them over time.
Youโll also want to consider the resolution of your images, using high-resolution images can look sharp and professional while slightly blurry or pixelated images can give a more artistic vibe. Overall, you should aim for most of your images to be clear and higher resolution, especially your main portrait photo that goes along with your introduction.
The third point you will want to keep in mind if you are designing your website on your own is image optimization โ๏ธ. Optimizing images for web use helps to ensure they load quickly and that they donโt bog down your site speed. This involves compressing images, usually in a third-party program, without sacrificing the quality.
Having intuitive NAVIGATION ๐งญ for your visitors is the third aspect of website design.
Navigation is a critical condition for a superior user experience and should be structured in a way that helps visitors find what theyโre looking for with ease.
Here are a few points to keep in mind.
First and foremost, use clear labels that accurately describe your navigational menu items and avoid complicated terminology to ensure that your visitors can easily understand the links they are clicking on.
Donโt reinvent the wheel here, stick with a logical structure and organize your menu in a way that is easy to follow. Group related items together and use dropdown menus if necessary to keep the navigation clean and uncluttered. This is important because less is more. Weโve all been to that website that has way too many navigation items listed across the header. These websites look messy and feel overwhelming.
Last, but not least, if you have a larger website with an extensive amount of content and you find that even the dropdown navigation menus are getting out of hand, you should consider including search functionality ๐ by adding a search bar that visitors can use to quickly find specific content. This is also helpful for after youโve written a significant number of articles on your blog.
The fourth aspect to remember when designing your website is VISUAL HIERARCHY.
Visual hierarchy guides visitorsโ attention to the most important sections first and can be achieved in a few different ways.
The first way to implement visual hierarchy is through size and scale ๐, use larger sizes for more important areas of your website, such as headings and CTAs, to draw more attention to them.
Another way to create visual hierarchy is by using color and contrast to highlight key components, such as a brightly colored CTA button that stands out against a neutral background.
The third point to think about is positioning ๐, place important pieces in prominent positions, such as the top of the page or above the fold to ensure they are seen first.
Focusing on these four aspects of design โ consistency, images, navigation, and visual hierarchy โ will help you create a visually appealing website that not only captures visitorsโ attention but also reflects the identity of your business in a more aesthetically pleasing way.
A well-designed website is going to build trust and encourage visitors to engage with your content, ultimately leading to more satisfaction and higher conversion rates.
Trust-Building Strategies for Your Website
Letโs go over a few strategies for building trust with your website.
One of the most important and yet often under-used strategies for building trust and credibility with someone who has never worked with you or your business is by showcasing TESTIMONIALS and REVIEWS โญ from those who have.
Displaying customer testimonials and reviews can significantly boost your standing in the eyes of your audience, so donโt forget to add these into sections of your website. Positive feedback from satisfied customers can serve as social proof, reassuring new visitors of your reliability and professionalism.
Another strategy for building trust through your website is by highlighting relevant CERTIFICATIONS and AWARDS ๐.
If you or your business have received any certifications, awards, or industry recognitions, make sure to showcase them prominently on your website as this only helps to add an extra layer of trustworthiness.
This obvious strategy is certainly not one to be overlooked and that is to provide clear CONTACT INFORMATION ๐ to your website visitors.
One of the most frustrating things when searching for a product or service is to be unable to contact the business or individual associated. It also brings out scam vibes, and that is obviously not ideal if you are trying to run a legitimate business. So, make it easy for visitors to get in touch by including a unique and detailed form on your contact page. Aside from being easily found, it will give you a good understanding of what your new potential customer wants and needs before you start an interaction. Depending on your line of work, you might also consider adding an email address, phone number, and physical address if applicable. Incorporating these features into your contact page is going to show that you are approachable, want to work with new clients, and that you are ready to assist.
Our last strategy, but certainly not the least important, is to maintain a PROFESSIONAL BLOG ๐.
Regularly publishing informative and valuable content on your blog can position you as an authority in your industry. Consistently sharing insights, tips, and updates that are relevant to your audience will build lasting rapport and keep them coming back to engage with you.
